Thermocouple Cable - FAQ
- What is the difference between extension wire and compensating cable?
Extension wire has the same thermocouple alloy as the sensor and is used to extend a measurement circuit over short distances. Compensating cable uses alloys that mimic the thermocouple’s voltage characteristics and are generally used for longer cable runs, provided that the join of compensating to thermocouple material is kept within certain temperature limits (0ºC to 80ºC and usually around ambient for all practical purposes). - How do I identify a thermocouple cable?
Thermocouple cables are colour-coded by type according to international standards. For example, Type K wires have yellow insulation, Type J has black and white, etc. See our full thermocouple colour code guide here. - What temperature ranges can thermocouple cables handle?
It depends on the insulation type. PVC cables are suitable up to ~105°C, PTFE/PFA up to ~250°C, fibreglass up to ~480°C, and ceramic fibre cables up to 1200°C. - Can I use multipair thermocouple cable for single-sensor runs?
Yes, but single-pair cables are more cost-effective for individual sensors. Multipair cables are best when routing multiple sensors in panels or control systems.
